DCU’s New History You Can Bank On Series: The Surprising Origins of ZooTampa

Today, we're kicking off a brand-new series called History You Can Bank On, spotlighting the rich stories behind the communities and people we serve at Darden Credit Union.

And what better place to start than ZooTampa - a local spot that has been part of countless Tampa Bay childhoods, family outings, and lasting memories.

In this first episode, DCU's own Terrence N. shares a surprising piece of local history: ZooTampa got its start in the 1930s as a small exhibit featuring Florida native wildlife in Plant Park at the University of Tampa.

In the 1950s, the animals found a new home in Seminole Heights, where whimsical touches like a colorful bridge helped make the zoo a beloved destination for generations of Tampa families.

Then came a bold transformation. In the 1980s, community leaders reimagined what the zoo could become. When the gates reopened in 1988, guests were welcomed into larger, more natural habitats and a renewed vision focused on animal care, education, and conservation.
